McDonalds finedMcDonald’s has been fined £200 000 (about R3,4 million) after a teenage employee was hit by a motorist outside its Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock, Essex.

Danny Osborne (then 17 years old), was asked by his manager to go outside and direct customers, due to the unclear road signs of the restaurant’s drive-through and car park entrances.

According to Safety & Health Practitioner (SHP), while Osborne was directing the customers, one driver became aggressive and drove into him, leaving him with a fractured knee. He was also forced to give up boxing and his career in construction.

“The fast-food giant admitted two breaches of health and safety at Basildon Crown Court. Thurrock Council brought the prosecution after its investigation into the incident in April 2014 found McDonald’s had not trained its staff how to direct and control traffic,” reports SHP.

“This accident has really stopped me from doing all the things, physically, that I wanted to do growing up. I will have to live with this for the rest of my life,” says Osborne.

McDonald’s was found not to have provided sufficient training, and the company was fined £200 000 and ordered to pay £26 343 (about R452 953) in costs.
